New Rules for South Australian P Platers

What is Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBT&A)?

It is commonly known as logbook training for the general public. It is designed by South Australian government, the Department of Infrastructure and Transport (D.I.T.). If learners choose to go down this path to get their licence, they must learn with an Accredited or Accredited and Authorised examiner, who will teach them all the tasks (30 Tasks in total / yellow section of the Driving Companion), and assess the students to the standards set by D.I.T. Toward the end of the training, at Task 30, learners must complete a final drive assessment to the required standards and then they will be issued a Certificate of Competency and then they can apply for their P1. Overseas licence conversion drivers can choose CBT and A as well if they wish.

What is VORT (Vehicle On Road Test)?

It is the traditional driving test. By choosing this option, the learner will train with any qualified motor driving instructor ( MDI licence or better ) and practice with any qualified supervising driver, until they can achieve the standards required by D.I.T. then they can book a driving test with an Authorised examiner who has never trained the candidate.

On the day of the test, the candidate will meet the examiner, at the booked VORT starting location called hub.

An authorised examiner cannot test his/her own students. It is against government regulations.
With VORT, the candidate will be required to demonstrate 5 slow speed manoeuvres to the standards set by D.I.T. They include Moving off from the kerb, 3 point turn, angle park, reverse parallel park and U-turn in traffic. General driving skills will need to meet the high standards set by D.I.T as well. If at any time during the test, the candidate breaks a road law point (example: go over the speed limit, fail to give way or driving without due care....), the test will be terminated and returning to the start point (no second chance).

For both options; there is a possibility that a government auditor will be coming along for a ride. He/she will meet the examiner and the candidate at the booked VORT / CBT starting location. Their role is to ensure the integrity of the assessment or test.

Our Accredited and Authorised Examiner will explain the required standards in details and teach them thoroughly to the students during lessons.
